As a shy kid with a pixie haircut, my favorite thing to do was to wander along the sandy beaches of Puget Sound, Washington, turning over rocks to see what treasures lie underneath. Today, I carry the same love of discovery while walking with my camera. Sometimes intuition taps me on the shoulder and says, "Look over there." That's when I make my most heartfelt images. On the business-y side, for 20 years I taught photography through the University of Alaska. (I loved--and miss--creating black and white prints in the darkroom). Since 1985, I've worked at the craft of photography. My work hangs in The Smithsonian and has been published by Reader's Digest, Better Homes & Gardens, Patagonia, The Nature Conservancy, National Geographic Traveler... oh dear, I won't bore you with lists.
